BACKGROUND: In 1993, Dr. Tom Kim began providing care for the working uninsured for free in his office. He realized the need for medical access for this underserved population. He added several rural clinic locations that are still in existence today, adding hours to a busy mission. Driven by his Christian values and vision of giving back, Dr. Kim’s life story embodies what Americans can achieve with commitment and dedication. He escaped the Korean War as a child, migrated to the United States, and was welcomed into a country and a region that gave him the opportunity to succeed and serve.
The Free Medical Clinic of America has now treated thousands of patients through the years, averaging 4000 visits a year. Inspired by Dr. Kim’s commitment, East Tennessee physicians and dentists have generously dedicated their time. Additionally, residents and medical school volunteers have benefited from supervised learning on the complex needs of the underserved. The clinic defines how communities can take care of their neighbors’ well-being. In the last few years, the clinic has added a dental wing, increased bilingual services, and added medical partnerships to build provider development in our underserved region.
