How to Prepare for an Immigration Attorney or USCIS Appointment

A detailed preparation checklist for attorney consultations, biometrics, interviews, InfoPass-style appointments, interpreters, documents, timelines, and follow-up.

Preparing documents for an immigration attorney or USCIS appointment

What to know first

  • The appointment notice controls what to bring and where to go.
  • Organize copies by date and type.
  • Never hide arrests, prior filings, denials, overstays, or inconsistent information from your lawyer.
  • Write down the next step, owner, deadline, and expected proof before leaving.

Build a clean case file

  • Appointment notice and photo identification.
  • Passport, visa, I-94, employment authorization, and immigration documents that apply.
  • Birth, marriage, divorce, adoption, or court records relevant to the matter.
  • Complete copies of prior applications, petitions, supporting evidence, and translations.
  • Receipts, correspondence, tracking, and payment records.
  • A dated timeline of entries, exits, addresses, work, relationships, filings, and major events.

Prepare differently for a lawyer and for USCIS

An attorney consultation is confidential within the limits the lawyer explains. Give the lawyer the complete facts so advice is based on reality. Ask what additional documents are needed and what should not be filed yet.

A USCIS appointment is an agency interaction. Follow the notice, arrive early enough for security, bring only permitted items, and answer truthfully. If you do not understand a question, say so rather than guessing.

Interpreters and translations

Ask in advance whether an interpreter is permitted or required and who may serve. Do not assume a family member is acceptable. Documents not in English generally need a complete translation with an appropriate certification; your attorney can explain what is required for the particular filing.

The five questions to leave with

  • What happens next?
  • Who is responsible for it?
  • What is the deadline?
  • What proof should I receive or keep?
  • When should I follow up if nothing arrives?

After the appointment

Scan and file new notices immediately. Calendar deadlines in two places. If your address changes, follow the official process required for your case and court situation; telling one organization may not update every agency.

Common questions

Should I bring original documents?

Bring originals when the notice or attorney requests them, but also keep organized copies. Do not surrender an original without understanding why and obtaining appropriate proof.

What if information in an old filing is wrong?

Tell your attorney before filing or attending an interview. Do not invent an explanation or silently repeat information you believe is inaccurate.
